Late last week, Apple’s Joel Podolny, dean of Apple University, and Morten Hansen, an Apple University faculty member, published a 4,800-word Apple case study in the Harvard Business Review. The article was focused on how Apple has retained its functional organizational structure despite being a much larger company. In addition, Apple’s leadership structure was discussed in ways that most people have never been exposed to up to now. There is a lot to unpack from the article. Accordingly, today’s update will be dedicated to the topic.
We first go over my thoughts on Apple’s functional organizational structure and the difference between a functional and multidivisional structure. While our focus will be primarily on Apple, it’s difficult to isolate one company as the Subcommittee staff report ended up lumping the four into one bucket. The update kicks off with my overall thoughts on the report. The focus then turns to six major holes in the Subcommittee staff’s logic and rationale when it came to classifying Apple as a monopoly. We conclude with a look at Apple’s initial response to the report and what I think will be the next steps moving forward.

The discussion goes over the most interesting comments made by Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Bosworth, who runs Facebook’s AR/VR/hardware efforts. The update then turns to Zuckerberg talking down the near-term viability of AR glasses and the major difference in strategy between Facebook and Apple regarding how each company is working towards genuine AR glasses. We conclude with the notable difference between Facebook’s vision of the next paradigm shift in computing and my perspective on the topic. The discussion brings in Apple Watch, Facebook’s interest in Fitbit, and why I think design will play a key role in achieving success in wearables.

Each email is 2,000 words and includes Neil’s analysis and perspective on the most important stories and news impacting Apple. Unlike other paid emails that may sporadically talk about Apple, every Above Avalon daily update is focused on Apple. New updates are sent Monday through Thursday.
