Apple Acquires Sonera

Hello everyone. In recent years, Apple has acquired approximately 10 companies annually. Historically, the vast majority of these acquisitions went unreported because they were so small. However, as we will talk about shortly, due to DMA disclosure laws, Apple is now required to disclose its acquisitions. Today’s update will be dedicated to discussing Apple’s most recent acquisition.

Let’s jump right in.

M&A points to Apple’s growing interest in developing a new user interface.

One day prior to Apple hosting its product event at Apple Park last month, news regarding Apple acquiring Sonera broke. Not surprisingly, the news flew under many radars.

The Sonera acquisition is the latest Apple acquisition to be disclosed via the DMA (EU). The regulation requires “gatekeepers” to disclose acquisitions with a minimum of four months between such disclosure being submitted and when the information is released to the public. The following snippet is from the European Commission’s website:

“Apple Inc. (‘Apple’), through a subsidiary, will acquire certain assets from Sonera, Inc. (‘Sonera’) and offer employment to and hire certain Sonera employees. Sonera is developing a chip-based magnetic sensor. Apple (together with its group companies) designs, manufactures and markets smartphones, personal computers, tablets, wearables and accessories, and sells a variety of related services."

The acquisition occurred back on May 8th.
