Amazon Unveils New Smart Home Gadgets
A renewed battle for the smart home is approaching.
Smart home gadgets have long represented a central part of Amazon’s broader hardware strategy. Last year, we began to see some shifts in Amazon’s hardware strategy. With Panos Panay in charge of devices, Amazon has aimed for higher-priced, more premium devices that will sell in lower volumes than what we saw from the company in the 2010s. Instead of seeking to enter new, non-Prime homes with cheap hardware, Amazon has become more interested in improving engagement and ecosystem penetration among existing Prime households.
With Panay, Amazon has also embraced a more focused mantra when it comes to hardware. It's been a positive development. Back during the pandemic, there had been an ugly stretch in which Amazon was just unveiling products to see if there would be enough interest to justify going to market.
