Apple to Unveil a (Renewed) Push for the Home

Intelligence in the home will represent an inflection point.

The home is a treasure trove of data. Up to now, the smart home movement has revolved around tech companies trying to grab as much of that data as possible. Privacy has been an after-thought while promises of delivering intelligence and personalization have left much to be desired.

Prognostications from the 2010s that smart speakers and digital voice assistants would take over the home, devaluing our other gadgets, did not pan out. Instead, we have seen pockets of sales and adoption success in specific smart home device verticals such as doorbell cameras and security cameras. Within the smart home genre, peace of mind tied to security has been the easiest device sales pitch for companies to make.

For the past decade, Apple has shown interest in going beyond selling personal gadgets and services used within the home to play more directly in the smart home. HomeKit (2014), the Home app (2016), HomePod (2018), HomePod mini (2020), Thread support (2020), and Matter support (2022) demonstrate Apple’s continued desire to do more in expanding its presence in the smart home space.
