Going Beyond Apple’s Presentation: Interesting Tidbits and Observations From Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” Event (Part 3)

Hello everyone. Before we conclude my notes from Apple’s presentation from last week, we will circle back to discuss the differences between pre-taped presentations and live, on-stage presentations. Let’s jump in.

Benefits Found With Pre-Taped Presentations, There Is a Lot Hinging on iPhone Duo

Benefits Found With Pre-Taped Presentations

It’s difficult to believe, but it’s been seven years since Apple held a live, on-stage presentation to unveil products. Apple’s installed base has grown significantly since its last live presentation occurred. Looking specifically at the iPhone, the installed base has expanded by nearly 50% over the past seven years. As we will cover below, such strong installed base growth has strengthened the argument for pre-taped presentations.

When comparing on-stage presentations to pre-taped presentations, pre-taped is the superior option for Apple. The benefits found with pre-taped presentations include the following:

1) Greater Efficiency. With pre-taped presentations, Apple can include more information in a much shorter presentation. Never-ending rounds of applause from the audience have become a thing of the past with pre-taped presentations. (Some applause still occurs from time to time when pre-taped presentations are shown in Steve Jobs Theater auditorium.) Inefficiencies like presenters walking on and off stage have been removed. The greater efficiency reason is enough on its own to justify Apple going with pre-taped presentations over live, on-stage presentations.

2) Higher Entertainment Value. Apple’s pre-taped presentations are more enjoyable to watch than live presentations. While this point obviously contains some subjectivity, comparing Apple’s last on-stage presentation in September 2019 to last week’s pre-taped presentation, the difference is night and day. With on-stage presentations, the focus inevitably landed on the presenters more than the products being unveiled. It was almost as if the products were secondary to the presentation itself. The exact opposite exists with pre-taped presentations as the focus is put on the product.

3) Stronger Global Applicability. With the product being put front-and-center with pre-taped presentations, they perform better
